Call for last woman convicted under Witchcraft Act to be pardoned

News & Events 1 Comment »

Campaigners have submitted a petition to the Scottish Parliament calling for the last woman convicted under the Witchcraft Act to be pardoned. Helen Duncan spent nine months in Holloway prison after being found guilty at a trial in 1944.

Mrs Duncan told a séance a warship had sunk before the news was officially announced. A second petition organised by a paranormal group, Full Moon Investigations, calls for all those convicted under Witchcraft legislation in Scotland to be pardoned. A petition to the Westminster government last year failed to secure a pardon for Mrs Duncan, and the new document calls on the Scottish Government to urge the Home Secretary to reconsider the case.

Chicken Out Campaign

In Britain, we consume 855 million chickens a year - thats 12 times as much chicken as we did 30 yrs ago. 95% of the chicken we consume comes from Intensive Farm units where birds are grown with no natural daylight, no stimulation and nothing to do but eat and eat for 39 days when they are sent to slaughter.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall alongside Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey have joined up to campaign for better conditions for these birds and a better deal for the Farmers who produce them - They are being squeezed by the Supermarkets to produce as much food for as little cost as possible.

How Did You Mark The Solstice?

I simply marked the sunrise at a local stone circle. These people created a stone cairn on the beach at South Landing Flamborough, East Yorkshire and burned a fire on top of it all night … see the video on youtube here and the photo’s here

Happy Solstice

I hope you had a lovely Solstice, I most certainly did :D

I greeted the dawn, well the lightening of the sky, at Castlerigg Stone Circle and it wasn’t that cold, certainly not as cold as it was last year. It was still dark when I arrived at Castlerigg but luckily not pitch black or I would have walked into the rope closing off part of the circle. Two parts were fenced off, it must be to give the ground a chance to heal as the ground around them, though frozen on Saturday, was clearly well churned up and a mass of sheep prints were up close to the stones.
